In this video, Dr. Hartman discusses what causes a middle ear infection and what it looks like when there is an ear infection. Some key points include:
1) The majority of ear infections are self-limiting and will resolve without antibiotics.
2) Ear infections may be painful and therefore treating potential pain with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen is important.
3) If your child has ear pain for more than 72 hours or a fever over 101 degrees, or if you are unable to control your child’s pain with acetaminophen and ibuprofen, an office visit is recommended,
4) It is extremely rare for ear infections to cause permanent hearing loss or long-term language development.
